Itinerary

Day 1Meet Eagle Hunter Family, Western Mongolia

The adventure begins with an early domestic flight to Olgii, arriving in the morning. Our crew will be waiting for you at the local airport. From there, you’ll head to Sagsai village, home to many eagle hunter families. You’ll have the chance to meet a local eagle hunter family, immerse yourself in their culture, and get to know them personally. The family typically has various daily tasks, and you’ll participate in their lifestyle—feeding livestock, milking cows, helping the locals herd the animals at sundown, cleaning shelters, and more. You’ll spend the night in the winter house of the eagle hunter family. In the evening, you’ll enjoy dinner with the locals and have a conversation with the eagle hunters about their daily lives. Day 2Hunting with Golden Eagles

Start your day with horseback riding alongside eagle hunters as they hunt with golden eagles. Typically, 2-3 eagle hunters will lead the way to the mountain hills, and you’ll join them on horseback while the driver remains nearby. Together, you’ll track the footprints of wildlife, such as foxes or rabbits, alongside the eagle hunters. Usually, eagle hunters hunt like foxes or rabbits with their golden eagles, but this is a rare occurrence for tourists due to the challenging terrain. Eagle hunters often ride to very high gorges where it’s unsafe for tourists to ride horses. Instead, you’ll explore safer areas of the mountains with the eagle hunters. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to observe how they train their golden eagles in the wild and even participate in training under their safe instructions. Throughout the day, the driver and cook will be nearby, providing refreshments like coffee and tea. Later in the evening, you’ll return to the family’s home where you’ll enjoy a mini concert featuring traditional local instruments. Dinner will be the traditional dish “Bes-Barmak,” and you’ll have the chance to engage in conversation about their way of life and perhaps even join in singing some songs.(B/L/D)Hunting with Golden Eagles, local eagle hunter - Esentai

Day 3Uriankhai family and Mongolian Ice games

You’ll drive about an hour into the mountains to meet the Uriankhai ethnic group, who have lived in this region for centuries. Their culture, language, and religion are distinct from those of the Khalkh Mongols. You’ll get a glimpse into their way of life and even try milking yaks and making traditional Mongolian vodka from yak milk. You’ll also have the chance to join a friendly Uriankhai archery competition with the locals. After saying goodbye to the family, we’ll head to the stunning panoramic Tolbo Lake. Here, you can enjoy ice skating and take part in various ice activities. Playing traditional Mongolian ankle bone games on the ice is especially fun. During the games, your cook will have hot coffee ready in the car for you to warm up before heading back to continue playing with the locals. Later, we’ll return to Olgii town for dinner at a local restaurant with the staff. You’ll spend the night at a hotel. (B/L/D)Uriankhai Family & Tolbo Lake

Along the way, you’ll traverse stunning mountainous terrain and serene valleys, passing through the local town of Ulaan Uul. As you drive through a pass near the town, you’ll encounter the picturesque 13 shamanic “Ovoo,” symbolizing the entrance to the land of shamans. Furthermore, will visit local nomadic family in Darkhad village and get involved in their cultures. Furtherly, we’ll drive to the Renchinlkhumbe village and stay overnight in a small local hotel.(B/L/D)

Day 6Jargalant River

We’ll drive about 35 km from the village to reach the Jargalant River. The landscape surrounding the river is incredibly beautiful, and despite Mongolia’s freezing temperatures, the Jargalant River remains unfrozen. While some local Mongolians choose to take ice baths in the river, we don’t recommend it unless you’re experienced. Exploring the area around the Jargalant River and enjoying lunch there is a wonderful experience on Mongolian winter tours. Afterward, we’ll return to the hotel for the night.(B/L/D)

Day 7Reindeer Herder Families in Taiga

We’ll drive further into the Taiga mountains until we reach the heart of the region, where the reindeer herders reside. Here, we’ll immerse ourselves in their daily lifestyle and culture. While the herders will have a teepee available, we will be staying overnight in a winter wooden hut with a stove fire. (B/L/D)

Day 9Lake Khuvsgul

So, we’ll head out from Khogorog early in the morning and drive about 350 km off-road, which should take us 7-8 hours to reach the lakeshore. Khuvsgul Lake, also known as Blue Pearl Lake, is surrounded by forested mountains and stands as one of Mongolia’s largest lakes. We’ll arrive at the tourist camp in the evening, where there are bathroom facilities. Chill out at the tourist camp.(B/L/D)Lake Khuvsgul
